Garden Visit

Garden of National SignificanceWylde Willow Garden is “A Garden of National Significance” as assessed by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.

The delightful Abbots Creek meanders for half a km through this large country garden. Inviting pathways follow the picturesque creek through a woodland featuring many rhododendrons, maples, viburnums, magnolias and cornus under planted with shade loving perennials. Hundred year old willows stand guard filtering the sunlight.

Encompassing the house are rooms of colour themed gardens. Roses and perennials are combined to create dramatic and surprising effects.

A grassed lane leads through the two acre parkland of maturing trees ending at a tranquil pond, the home of domestic and visiting ducks.

Tucked away in another corner is a collection of ‘saved’ heritage roses best viewed late Nov through till April when the hips are at their best.
